Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered type of virus. Most people infected with the COVID-19 virus will experience mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover without requiring special treatment. Older people and those with underlying medical problems like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, and cancer are more likely to develop serious illnesses.
The COVID-19 virus spreads primarily through droplets of saliva or discharge from the nose when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Protect yourself and others from infection by washing your hands or using an alcohol-based rub frequently and not touching your face.

Everyone in Australia will be offered a safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine. The COVID-19 vaccine is voluntary and free for everyone in Australia. Vaccination providers cannot charge you for the COVID-19 vaccine or your appointments to receive the vaccine. You will not need a prescription. At first, doses will be limited so high priority groups will get their vaccines first.
It is anticipated that selected community pharmacies will offer COVID-19 vaccination from June 2021 as part of Phase 2a of the Australian Government’s Vaccination Program.
